CUT UPS

Chelsea Bown
Age 18
Student studying Primary Teaching

I really wanted this shoot to be natural, no makeup, no big hair, just a real women at her best, although we may not think it.

My Space

The exhibition space I've been given is 3m37cm by 2m79cmm, which is a HUGE wall.

Because I've been given a bigger space then i expected ive changed my ideas of how to display my work, annotially  i was goign to display around 10 peices of my work but at only A3 size, however now ive been given such a good space of changed my idea so a bigger impact can be made.

Above is a mini set out of my wall to proportion. On the left you can see that there is a added piece of board as my space is on a different level to the rest and sticks out by about 5cm, however to not include this bit of space will possibly make my work look heavy to one side (shown in picture below), so I've decided to use it but to not put any pictures over it.

The picture directly above is a composition idea for were the frames shall be placed on my wall. I feel that here the photos are too far apart as i want the photos to almost come as a three, not as just three separate photos.

More composition idea's that brings the photos together more but places the frames at different heights.

The last composition idea is to start from the middle and work out so my middle one sits perfectly in the center. Whilst the other two are placed appox 15cm out from the middle frame. I really like this composition is it sets it at a trio and your eyes will be focused in the middle and work there way out.

Exhibition Ideas

At the Ikon Gallery i really liked how John Salts work was exhibited. His work was displayed in thin frames but had no glass cover on the front. This idea meant that there was no reflections on his work from lights.

Considering my work is small strips put together I really liked how this would allow me to display them in frames but I would have no glare. It also means that the pieces will display as one clearly and I feel will give off a better effect. I will paint the box black on the inside and outside to add depth to my photos.

As I am Printing my photos A1 size i will be making my own frames from wood, as this way I can make them to the size I need.

Ive decided that the wood for my frames will be 10mm thick and 5omm deep. Ive decided to have 10mm thick because i dont want the frame to look too bulky against my photos, as im using paper so print, i think that if i have the frames too bulk it will take away the elegance that the photos are meant to have and the contrasting meaning will almost fade away. The depth is 50mm because I don't want the frame too big as i want the photos to stand out. I think that they may get lost in the box if its too big.

"Sexualised Kids"

The story evolves around the issue that children's clothes underwear and other accessories are getting too sexualised. Which too some extent i agree with, retailers have been caught selling padded bras and bikinis for 8 year old's? WHAT! Why should 8 year old's even care at this point? they barely understand there own body at this age.

"Retail Week" Website

Also states how a new law is being launched to see if guidelines need to be put in place for retailers so that the production of sexual slogan t-shirts, fancy dress kits such as lap dancing, padded bra's/sexual underwear and heels are not being sold to small children not even in their teens.

Honestly, no wonder girls are growing up with no self confidence. Now anyone may say that parents wrap their children up to much which in some aspects i agree with, but when i was a child it was stupid dresses with thick tights then as i get older the more clothes i wore and the less skin i showed! Even music videos today are so sexualised, there's an age rating on films so shouldn't there be on music videos too? When i was young it was all about "STEPS" and "S CLUB 7" aha, not Rihanna's S&M.

Ikon Gallery

Exhibitions: Tadasu Takamine: Too far to see, John Salt & Kristoffer Myskja.

I vistited the Ikon Gallery for the second time on Tuesday the 31st on May, which i can admit that i felt slightly more inspired this time round compared to the first time of visiting the gallery.
The three artists above offered such different work that was in there own way excellent. Tadasu Takamine's work was almost "awkward". But I think that feeling really helped to convey what was going through his mind when he made each film. "God Bless America" was most interesting to me, this film consisted of the artist and his partner living in a red room for 18 days without leaving it. Its about America post 9/11 and how culture has been affected by the historic day.
Tadasu Takamine

John Salts work was truly inspiring and gave me great inspiration for my work and how to exhibit it, the technique he used also caught my eye as he airbrushed paint onto his work using stencils instead of using the ordinary brush. The size of the paintings really conveyed tons of emotion as you were almost lost in them.

John Salt

Kristoffer Myskja had the Tower room devoted to his work. It's called the "Machine that uses 1000 years to shut itself down" the work represents uselessness. But not it the harsh way it may seem, the machine was so elegant, even fragile persuing that maybe something just exist to exist, why should they need a reason or objective?

Kristoffer Myskja

Taking into account that the Art Foundation Group are currently working towards putting there own exhibition together we took this chance to also look at how the Gallery was set out.As we want our exhibition to look as professional as possible we took notes and ideas that we can reach the highest standards possible. We decided that we would each have our own information boxes next to our work to display our name, specialism/future commitments such as uni and course, a paragraph about our work and that it was the work of Art Foundation 2010-2011.

Shoot

Purely posting this because of how emotional im feeling about it.

Although it will be like any other shoot within the same conditions the fact that it's my sister is making me quite nervous.

Not because im doubting my camera skills but the fact I'm dressing her up as if shes going to a beauty pagent. The sort of dressing up that involves putting make up on a 11 year old and dressing her up in big dresses and heels.

Scared. purely because I dont want her too look at her self and think she looks better with all this makeup on, scared shes not going to want to take it off.

Don't really know how to go about this, other then to take the natural photos then put them against the fake ones and just run it through her mind that she's beautiful as her self.

Wish Me Luck.
