My Favourite Page Yet For The Book..

I've noticed that I'm really into colouring and shading at the moment which is really cool but as I've said... takes me FOREVER... So because it takes forever I make sure I document everything at different stages so if the group want to change a specific thing.. I can always use my images from previous stages as reference/ templates.

I think I like this so much because its so colourful.. and its always miserable in Leeds.

The text the image goes with: "he knows it is a city, but he thinks of it as a camel from whose pack hangs wine-skins and bags of candied fruit, date wine, tobacco leaves, and already he sees himself at the head of a long caravan taking him away from the desert of the sea"

Playing With Text

This is another piece of the selected text Invisible Cities.. Just playing around with composition and text.

City Poster: Google Text.

One of our tasks to do for the city poster was to put into Google > Books three words, one being CITY.

I decided to use "BUSY CITY SOUND" because since moving here alls i seem to think about is how busy it is and noisey..

Ok so the idea is that you search down untill you find something you liek or thats interesting, i found two quotes that i quite liked the look of:
"140 gunshot at close distance, 120 loud rock concert, jet aircraft taking off, 100 shouting at close range, very busy street, 90 busy city street, 70 average conversation, 60 typical small office or restaurant".

I added the last one to finish the poster off which I didn't make up, I did Google it. This was just a draft but took a lot of time because I was constantly playing around with each individual Number/Word. I decided to merge all the sentences together because I thought it adds a more busy/confused look, it also makes you look closer at the text and adds a pace.

"Maybe I Should Just Do A Degree In Colouring In?"

Although it does just look like I've coloured something in it was A LOT harder then that. For 5 years its been buried into my head that I need primary or secondary sources to draw from, this however was total imagination and I think was one on the hardest things to do ever. Trying to get something from your brain onto paper was just hell. I've decided I want my bf who's doing product design to design something that connects to your brain and projects the image onto paper.. This would be a dream.

But anyway, this was for a piece of text for the City Book brief. The book the text is taken from is called "Invisible cities" by Italo Calvino. If you get a chance, try reading some of the text from his book. The text itself is.. when you get your head round it beautiful but trying to make illustrations for a piece of text about a city that never existed is harder then you think.

"In the coastline's haze, the sailor discerns the form of a camels withers, an embroidered saddle with glittering fringe between two spotted humps, advancing and swaying"

Above is my interpretation of the above quote without making it too literal.

What Introduces Me In My New Sketchbook....

Yer.. That's right.. I decided to do some typography cut outs for my first page. Totally regretting it now. Although it looks good and I'm really proud of it, its a little annoying and I had to buy a "Soft Grip"Craft Knife because when I was using a plastic one I ended up with a numb finger tip from where I had been holding the craft knife for so long.. I WILL finish it.. Eventually.

Urghhhh D:

I have so much to post on here that if i done it all in one session I think ill be here till the morning... I shall post until I'm tired.

So,

I now have another sketchbook becuase my first one was too small for me to work in.

However because its bigger, if ofcourse means everything takes twice as long, which in my case is never good.

Although, even though its taken me twice as long, I'm actually really happy with the work I'm producing and genuinely enjoying the course.

The briefs are coming along in different stages,
The City book is coming along really well at the moment, the group is coming together and our ideas are collaberating together really well too.

The City Poster is having its moments.. I'm so indecisive that I keep changing my mind.. I started by playing around with text and got bored.

But I came across a artist/designer that I really like : Edward Bawden, ill probably post more about him. Anyway, hes put me on a whole knew track for my city poster.

The sketchbook as I've said is steady..ish. Were supposed to do a page a day but because I am who I am my pages take like 3/4 nights.

Participation has come to a hold but im planning on doing some cool cultural events this weekend.

The written piece.... KILL ME NOW...
